Carnallite KMgCl3 · 6H2O is a natural crystalline hydrate with the following chemical composition:
Mg — 8.7 percent; K — 14.1 percent;
Cl — 38.3 percent; H2O — 38.9 percent.
The content of potassium chloride in it reaches 25 percent, magnesium chloride — 29 percent, water of crystallization — 31 percent. Besides, the ore may contain NaCl (up to 9 percent) and insoluble residue (2 to 3 percent).
Products derived from carnallite are potassium chloride and magnesium chloride.
Potassium chloride is a concentrated potassium fertilizer.
From magnesium chloride the following can be produced:
light magnesia used the medical industry;
medium magnesia used in paper industry;
heavy magnesia in production of refractories;
magnesium metal for production of magnesium alloys;
magnesia cements used in construction industry.
The total estimated reserves of carnallite in the Republic of Belarus exceed 2 billion tonnes. The depth of occurrence is 853 meters, the thickness of the carnallite layer is 8.8 to 9.4 meters.
